REGENCY ERA CITY GIRL WITH MONEY MEETS SEXY COUNTRY GUY WHO CAN’T DANCE. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

Don’t you love a good Regency romance series? When it comes to Regency Romance books, one of my favorite crafters of this subgenre is Grace Burrowes. She creates a world for her stories with style and historic accuracy and then permits her hero and heroine to walk onto the stage and live their lives. What could be better?
Her Mischief in Mayfair series is great fun. This is how Ms. Burrowes explains the plot on her website:
“The long years of war on the Continent are finally over, and all these men want is a life of peaceful obscurity. War has changed them, though, and they don’t fit into Polite Society’s waltzing, wagering, wenching mold, if they ever did. Each man must rediscover himself if he’s to rebuild his dreams, and that will mean fighting one last battle — for the heart of a very special lady!”
I recently read Book 8, Miss Dashing and enjoyed it immensely.
A young man who has grown up in the country and didn’t know until recently that he was the heir to a marquisate has come to London to learn to fit into society. Lord Phillip Vincent is a really wonderful hero. He is good to the core despite a difficult childhood. He treats women with respect. He would rather get out into the field, take off his shirt and work on the haying than dance a waltz in a stuffy ballroom. And according to our heroine, it is quite worthwhile watching him work with his shirt off!
Miss Hecate Brompton is approaching spinster status despite her very great wealth. She knows everything about navigating the traps of the ton, but her somewhat “irregular” background is a problem. Hecate is the love child of her mother and her mother’s lover, but she is acknowledged by the man to whom her mother was married when Hecate was born. She inherited her mother’s fortune and is the only “Brompton” with money. It has become her job to keep the entire family afloat. Although she does an excellent job of it, most of her relatives are either jealous or dismissive of her.
Lord Phillip asks Hecate to help him learn to navigate the ton. With some reluctance, she agrees.
There are some lovely, romantic scenes between the two. Hecate is a woman of character who is not afraid to ask for what she wants when she decides to take Lord Phillip as her lover. The sex scenes are steamy, but handled with a very deft touch.
There is a plot twist about halfway through the book that adds some tension to the story and is resolved in a really lovely way. Naturally, everything works out for the two lovers and they live happily ever after.
The supporting characters, as in all of Grace Burrowes’ books, are interesting in and of themselves. One especially wonders what will happen to Lord Phillip’s sister-in-law’s brother, young Gavin DeWitt, a supportive presence in this book but obviously one with a “story.”
Grace Burrowes writes a great historical romance that is fun to read and to re-read. Enjoy!
This book was published in August 2023 and is a full-length Regency novel. It is available in paperback and on Kindle.
