100 Bar and Bat Mitzvah Wishes
a bar or bat mitzvah, the coming-of-age milestone often celebrated alongside a party for family and friends. And for such an important occasion, it can be challenging to know exactly the right thing to say in a card or other message. So bookmark our guide to bar and bat mitzvah wishes, quotes, and special messages, with feedback from rabbis, for whenever you need it.
For the celebrant, if possible, “I recommend writing a message in three parts,” says Rabbi Brian Zachary Mayer, author of Rabbi Brian’s Highly Unorthodox Gospel. “This is how I met you, this is who you are to me now, and this is what I hope you become.”
And don’t forget the parents of the star who have raised their child into adulthood, as recognized by the Jewish faith, and have brought the family to this proud day. “I would advise writing cards to both the parents and the celebrant,” the rabbi advises. “To the parents, I would advise writing support of them as they learn to take a step back from micromanaging the child. I think we miss how the coming of age celebration is also about the parents.”
What Is a Bar Mitzvah and a Bat Mitzvah?
A bar mitzvah is a ceremony marking the transition of a Jewish boy from childhood to adulthood. Likewise, a bat mitzvah is a ceremony marking the transition of a Jewish girl to official adulthood as recognized within the faith (it was only recognized in the last century or so). B’nai mitzvah is the plural form.
Rabbi and author Dr. Jo David adds a note about these traditional terms: “In some Jewish communities, the terms bar (son of) and bat (daughter of) mitzvah are being replaced with the term b’nai mitzvah (gender inclusive) The reason for this change is to signal the acceptance of young people who are gender fluid or transgender.”
The ceremony typically occurs on the morning of Shabbat at a synagogue. During it, the b’nai mitzvah traditionally leads part of the service, reads and chants from the Torah, and delivers a sermon or speech.
The ceremony often includes a Jewish blessing, luncheon, party, or other festive celebration.
What to Write in a Bar or Bat Mitzvah Card
Rabbi David says that a perfect bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah gift includes a card with a message containing some or all of the following components.
- It’s personal. “Add some detail that highlights your relationship to the individual,” Rabbi David advises.
- It contains praise for “something specific that the young person did.” Specifically, you likely want to “comment on their poise or another aspect of their presentation.”
- It contains a note of congratulations or mazel tov.
- It ends with a positive wish for the person’s future.
While it’s always best to make the message your own, here are 100 ideas for inspiration.
